Congratulations to Ditte Solgaard Dunn for winning Silver on last months image awards and gaining a Judges Favourite award! Each month, judges favourites will get their own featured blog to take a look behind the scenes at how the image was shot!
Where was your image taken?
The image was taken in the Signet Library in Edinburgh, one of Scotland’s most beautiful wedding venues.
How did you go about capturing it?
We had already finished taking the official photos - most of them were taken outside as it was a beautiful sunny summer’s day. When we came back inside I noticed the late afternoon light streaming through the windows, casting light and shadows on the walls in the entry hall. The entry hall is an impressive space but at weddings, it’s always full of coats, umbrellas and buggies, so I haven’t taken many photos in that space before. However, the strong sunlight allowed me to darken the space to eliminate the disturbing elements and create a simple and strong composition. I deliberately chose to keep a wide frame, to let the stare of the bust on the left pull you into the picture to the subject’s bright face standing out in relief from the dark edges surrounding it, and then on to a barely perceptible third face in the bottom right-hand corner. This plays out against a background of the geometric lines of the window and their shadows interwoven in the daylight.
What equipment did you use?
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-70mm f2.8 lens
Is Wedding photography your main focus?
Yes! Although I capture family portraits and commercial photography too, weddings are the main part of my business.
What advice would you give to others wanting to shoot weddings?
Only do it if you are really passionate about it. Be prepared to see your spare hours sucked up in a black hole of editing, planning, designing, blogging, re-editing and office admin. Say goodbye to Saturdays spent with your family. In order to be really good at it, you have to genuinely find weddings interesting, to care about the people, moments and details you’re capturing. If you are prepared for this, then it’s hands-down the best job in the world. Website: https://www.firstlight.photos/
